Esto me ha dado la oportunidad a completar y mejorar esta guía. También ha ampliado el rango de la área de estudio. Mas o menos 50 de las nuevas especies en esta edición han sido fotografiados en los bosques primarios de la Reserva Los Cedros, 40 km al norte de Mindo.<br /><br />Todavía este libro no intenta de ninguna manera ser una flora comprensiva del bosque nublado Andino ni del área alrededor de Mindo, Ecuador. Para dar crédito a la diversidad y abundancia de las plantas de esa región tomaría volúmenes. Esta guía ofrece una introducción a la identificación de las especies más comunes. <br /><br />No soy un experto en la flora de los neotrópicos, pero por pasando meses en el campo y con la ayuda de una diversidad de recursos yo he intentado juntar la tipa de guía que yo quería cuando primero vine al bosque nublado. Su posición en línea ecuatorial y el amplio rango de elevación provisto por los Andes, conceden al Ecuador una riqueza de diversidad ecológica con un rango altitudinal que va desde el nivel del mar a más de 6.000 metros. Este es un país pequeño (256.370 Km2)1 que ocupa apenas el 0,2% de la superficie terrestre1, sin embargo, tan solo toma un viaje de corta distancia desde las selvas de tierras bajas hasta las escarpadas regiones andinas. La diversidad geográfica provee de nichos para aproximadamente 20.000-30.000 especies de plantas1 que representa alrededor del 10% de las especies del mundo1. El ‘Catálogo de Plantas Vasculares del Ecuador’ enumera 17.058 especies y más son reconocidas cada día2.<br />Debido a su ubicación ecuatorial, todos los sitios en el Ecuador reciben aproximadamente la misma cantidad de radiación solar durante el año, variando no más que 30 minutos en cualquier parte del país3. Esto da lugar a temperaturas medias relativamente constantes mes a mes. La mayoría de áreas registra una variación de 3°C a lo mucho3. Para un sitio determinado, las fluctuaciones diarias de temperatura son generalmente más pronunciadas que los cambios en todo el año.<br /><br />Los ciclos anuales significativos son los patrones de precipitación3. Una región determinada puede tener una estación seca y húmeda. Dicho esto, algunas regiones experimentan más que una temporada de lluvias cada año, y no es raro a tener algunas lluvias, incluso durante la estación “seca”3.<br /><br />La mayoría de fotografías incluidas en esta guía fueron tomadas durante la temporada local de lluvias. Esto significa que ciertos grupos (como las orquídeas) tenían más probabilidad de estar en flor, pero que otros tenían menos probabilidades de estar en floración. Sin embargo, debido a la constancia de captación solar, los trópicos experimentan una aparente falta de estacionalidad y una tendencia de las plantas a florecer todo el año (excepto cuando se quiere ver!). Un claro contraste con el despliegue de la floración concentrada de las primaveras templadas.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Chocó Andino</span><br />El región Chocó extiende desde el Canal de Panamá en el norte hasta Colombia y el nor occidente del Ecuador4. El región también tiene una amplia rango de elevación, desde el nivel de mar hasta 4.000msnm o mas4. Es considerada por muchos a ser una de las regiones lo mas biodiverso en el mundo4,5. <br />En el punto noroeste de América Sur, esta donde el corriente caliente Panamá del norte confluye con el curiente fria Humbolt de Antarctica. El aire arriba de la curiente Panama es caliente y tiene un montón de agua. Cuando llega a la corriente fría, con aire seca, todo el agua cae como lluvia. Esa lluvia abundante combinado con la variación en elevación contribuyen a la biodiversidad. Mindo y la area alrededor representa el porcion Andino de esa region.<br /><span style="font-weight:bold;"><br />Mindo</span><br />El pueblo de Mindo está localizado al norte del Ecuador, noroeste de Quito. Está en la vertiente occidental de los Andes a 1.300 m de elevación y goza de una cercana proximidad tanto con elevaciones más bajas como altas.<br />El ecosistema es “bosque nublado”, es también denominado “bosque montano bajo” por algunos autores3. Las características ecogeográficas del bosque nublado se producen entre 700 - 2.500 m en ambos lados de los Andes. Estos incluyen alta humedad casi constante, frecuente neblina, y cargas densas de epifitas vasculares y musgos en las ramas y troncos de los árboles3. A pesar de la falta de datos cuantitativos, es ampliamente aceptado que la diversidad y la densidad de epifitas vasculares son en realidad mayores en los bosques nublados que en los bosques lluviosos de tierras bajas3.<br /><br />Cabe señalar que los bosques primarios intactos en esta elevación se encuentran bajo seria amenaza por la explotación forestal, agricultura, minería y otras actividades humanas.<br /><span style="font-weight:bold;"><br />Formato de la Guía</span><br />He arreglado esta guía de acuerdo al hábito (árbol, arbusto, hierba, etc.), se trata de un nuevo intento desde la primera edición para que la información sea más accesible a las personas con formación botánica limitada. Esto será molesto en los casos en que la delgada línea entre árbol y arbusto no sea tan obvia; sin embargo espero que la facilidad de acceso en última instancia, sean superiores a este inconveniente.<br />Se hace hincapié en las especies que son nativas o naturalizadas y se producen sin intervención humana. Sin embargo, he incluido una sección al final: “Plantas Comúnmente Cultivadas”, donde incluyo una serie de especies interesantes que nos pueden ser desconocidos para los visitantes de climas templados. He incluido el nombre de la familia, el nombre en latín o nombre científico, y los nombres comunes en español e inglés cuando fue posible.<br /><br />El numero de especies en Ecuador por los generos y el numero de especies endemicas en los generos estan dados con las abreviaciones ‘inc.’ para ‘incluyendo’ y ‘endem.’ para ‘endemica.’ Toda la información sobre las especies endémicas del Ecuador proviene del ‘Catálogo de Plantas Vasculares del Ecuador3.’<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Convenciones Botánicas </span><br />He seguido las denominaciones taxonómicas utilizadas en el "Catálogo de Plantas Vasculares del Ecuador3' especialmente para la determinación de nivel de la familia. <br />Cuando no estoy seguro de la especie exacta he usado la forma corta “cf.” o “circa forma,”, que significa "se ve como esta especie, pero no se pudo confirmar de manera definitiva". <br /><br />A veces conozco el género pero no la especie (incluso al nivel de "circa forma"). En este caso uso "sp." para designar a "una especie de este género." Otras veces les presento varias especies del mismo género. En este caso utilizo la denominación "spp." que significa "varias especies en el género." <br /><br />Ejemplos: <br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Erythrina cf. smithiana</span> - es definitivamente un <span style="font-style:italic;">Erythrina</span>, y es probable que <span style="font-style:italic;">E. smithiana</span>. <br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Erythrina sp.</span> - Es definitivamente alguna especie de <span style="font-style:italic;">Erythrina</span>. <br /><span style="font-style:italic;">Erythrina spp.</span> - Varias especies de <span style="font-style:italic;">Erythrina</span>. <br />Las convenciones permiten la abreviación de un género con la primera letra, si la palabra completa ya se ha utilizado en un párrafo. De este modo <span style="font-style:italic;">Erythrina smithiana</span> se abrevia <span style="font-style:italic;">E. smithiana</span>.<br /><br />Dado que los nombres científicos pueden cambiar con el tiempo, también he incluido la autoridad o el autor de todos los nombres científicos utilizados. Erythrina smithiana es más correctamente escrito <span style="font-style:italic;">Erythrina smithiana</span> Krukoff. Esto le permite al lector saber que el nombre que se utiliza es el que fue asignado por Krukoff. Esto hace que sea posible realizar el seguimiento del uso de sinónimos científicos. Carlous Linnaeous, considerado el padre de la nomenclatura moderna dio nombre a muchas especies de plantas, cuando él es la autoridad se observa la abreviatura "L." Para evitar que el texto se convierta en algo desordenado, toda la información de las autoridades se encuentra en el índice. <br /><span style="font-weight:bold;"><br />Etnobotánica </span><br />ADVERTENCIA: La información facilitada acerca de los usos de las distintas especies es el resultado de una búsqueda bibliográfica y se presenta solamente con fines educativos. Esta información no tiene como objetivo diagnosticar, tratar o curar cualquier enfermedad y no es un sustituto de la atención médica adecuada. <br />Se estima que el 80% de la población de los trópicos húmedos confían en las medicinas tradicionales para el cuidado diario de la salud1. La mayoría de estos remedios tradicionales se derivan de las plantas. Se estima que entre 5.000 - 8.000 especies en el Ecuador, aproximadamente el 25% -40% de la flora son útiles1.
